Kim Basinger claims she had to ‘relearn to drive’ after battle with agoraphobia

Kim Basinger has claimed she had to ‘relearn how to drive’ after years of suffering from agoraphobia had left her housebound, while speaking with Jada Pinkett Smith on Red Table Talk.

The 68-year-old star of 9½ Weeks appeared on the talk show with her daughter Ireland Baldwin in an episode released Wednesday, revealing that she battled the condition for years not knowing what it was.

Agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder that can create a fear of leaving one’s own home, is said to affect around 2% of adults in the United States, and Basinger says her condition got so bad she wouldn’t leave her house and ‘would no longer go to dinner.’

‘I had to relearn to drive, and for many years I would not go through the tunnels at Malibu,’ Basinger said on the show.

‘Everything used to make me nervous, like the glass [sliding] to open the door, or, “Where do I step to open the door?” Everything became a big job to figure out how to do it.’

‘You live with a dry mouth all the time, you’re very shaky, you’re just so exhausted all the time,’ she added.

Basinger described living with agoraphobia as ‘like something just completely shuts down within you and you have to relearn everything.’

Ireland added: ‘I just became this different person. I was emaciated in every way; I was lifeless.’

Much has been made of the return of Red Table Talk, given the circumstances around host Jada and her husband Will Smith following the infamous slapgate at the Oscars.

The 50-year-old media personality did not speak on the matter but did release a written statement at the beginning of the first episode of season five her Facebook Watch series.

It read: ‘Considering all that has happened in the last few weeks, the Smith family has been focusing on deep healing.

‘Some of the discoveries around our healing will be shared at the table when the time calls. Until then…the table will continue offering itself to powerful, inspiring and healing testimonies like that of our incredibly impressive first guest.’

It still remains unclear how candid Jada will be about her own life.

Though she has opened up about personal matters in the past — including affairs — the trailer makes no mention of how her husband slapped Chris Rock during the live Oscars broadcast last month after the comedian made a joke about her buzzcut.

Jada has been open in the past about her struggles with alopecia.

After the slap, Will returned to his seat and screamed ‘keep my wife’s name out of your f*****g mouth’ twice.
